Our Curriculum
Body Autonomy
Teaching young children consent begins with respect for their own bodies. At Airplane Cottage School, teachers coach children to take responsibility for themselves by encouraging self-directed dressing and toileting. Emotional Literacy People have big feelings. The first step to understanding emotion is the ability to define it. Am I happy? Sad? Angry? What can I do with these complex emotions? Conflict Resolution Different people can have different ideas, and that's okay! Rather than directly intervene during a conflict, teachers provide children with a set of tools to solve a problem. Teachers remain available should a student need help. Art and Play Art and play go hand-in-hand. Children are constantly creating their own worlds through fantasy play, building with manipulatives, and arranging materials. Airplane Cottage School provides students access to our "art library," stocked with everything a child needs to meet their sensorial and creative needs. While we do have art on a daily basis in the afternoons, we do not limit children to this time but rather encourage them to create as soon as they feel the inspiration! "Life Hunters" and "Community Seekers" We have two clubs at Airplane Cottage and you are welcome to join! Life Hunters look for life, but they never harm life. From a flower from our garden to a beetle in the dirt, Life Hunters respect and observe life. Our Community Seekers love to visit our community. They take walks to the park, the library, and nearby art studios. They say hello to our neighbors and make important connections about themselves and the city around them. Decision Making How can many people make one decision? We vote! When children need to make a group decision, they can call a team meeting. Teachers guide students through this process and facilitate discussions. |
